Sickle Cell - Bone Marrow and Babies...

Another family at the hospital is considering a bone marrow transplant for their 18 year old daughter...Mini's doctor would like for me to speak with them...their major concern is fertility.  Hum...It is the biggest concern for most people who hear the words, "you need chemo."  Traditionally chemo means killing almost everything including your eggs if your a women...this was a major concern for me and Mini for about a week...I mean, the way the doctor explained it to us was, you may not be around to have a baby...or if you do have a baby, what if you don't live long enough to raise the baby...MAJOR LIFE DECISIONS...We had to step out on faith...and believe that if Mini was meant to have babies she would have babies in whatever way they came into her life...and we would love them no matter how they came into her life...But once again Mini has defied the odds and her period is back...already...which according to her doctor is a good sign of her continued fertility.  They can't be 100% sure, and Mini taking part in this study will help determine for generations of sickle cell patients to come whether or not conditioning for bone marrow transplant will leave you infertile...
